This is not a dream, and filmAEO is back when the Oscars is drawing close to its nominations announcement on 24th Jan, 2017 (Tuesday). Before hitting on the list, let us review what we saw over these few months:
- La La Land is buzzing all over the place throughout the season, and it could precede what West Side Story did back in 1961 with 10 Oscars. Both are musical and magical stories of love and dance. If you think back a few years ago, The Artist swept the big awards of the night, will La La Land set a record this year?
- Moonlight is well respected with its direction on reality, despite Mahershala Ali missing some nominations and wins in Best Supporting Actor. Truly, a safe lock for Best Picture and Best Director.
- Manchester by the Sea, a touching drama distributed by Amazon Studios, will have locks for Best Picture and Best Actor. Lucas Hedges may manage through to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
- Early birds such as Sully and Loving have the Oscars touch, but unfortunately very likely to be forgotten as they were released early.
- Latecomers such as Silence and Hidden Figures have a shot, particularly Silence has not been heard or nominated at other major awards. Do not forget Martin Scorsese plays a big shot at the Oscars nominations. Hidden Figures has the hidden momentum like The Help few years ago.
- Arrival arrives strong and it took my breath away completely. However, do not forget sci-fi movies do not normally do well in Best Director race, for example Christopher Nolan got snubbed for Inception and The Dark Knight. And of course, Ridley Scott for The Martian last year. History may repeat itself for Denis Villeneuve, who had such great vision and passion this year in leading Amy Adam's character in Arrival. So, safe nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress.
- Elle's Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress, Drama at the Globes beating Natalie Portman in Jackie. Academy will notice these films in the foreign category. Elle may earn Best Actress and Best Director nominations, even though it was omitted in the final shortlist of Best Foreign Language Film.
- Toni Erdmann is generating talks in the foreign category, so it should be safe for a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
- The music categories should lock La La Land's "City of Stars" and "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)", as well as Justin Hurwitz's musical piece of work.
The overview was based on a bit of historical patterns and gut feeling. It has become harder to predict this year as other award precursors set in different compared to previous years. So, once again now comes filmAEO's daring list of predictions...
